A picture of a mountain stream
When you stop and think about it, when you look around at things, it’s all pretty great. There’s just so much stuff. You’ve got…
- trash bags
- dragonflies
- aspirin
- jeans
- cholesterol
- the word “wow”
- a picture of a mountain stream
- speaker-wire
- lightning
- bullet lists
- rubber duckies
… well – I’m not going to list it all here, but there’s a lot, as I’m sure you’ve noticed. It would be nice if someone somewhere was keeping a list of everything that exists. (Is that one of the reasons we made computers – so we could create a way to catalogue everything so we don’t lose track of it?) But is it a finite list? That’s something for you to think about. Can something ever fall off this list? I guess no one would ever know. Does an item on the list count as something new that also needs to be added to the list… like this:
- the pancakes I made this morning
- the list item: “The pancakes I made this morning”
- the list item: “the list item: The pancakes I made this morning”
… you see what I mean. It gets pretty messy. If you were the list-maker, keeping track of the items on the list itself would really take up most of your time. I wouldn’t want to be the one in charge of it.
Let me know if you’re keeping a list like this. I’ve got a few things to add.
I started then realised the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy had already been done… ;)
About 10 days ago, Michael Stevens tried to count everything, and ended up with about 1.458x(10^227) objects in the universe, or 3.154x(10^116) if you don’t include thoughts.
