{"id":490,"date":"2012-11-06T15:45:06","date_gmt":"2012-11-06T15:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.joshworth.com\/?p=490"},"modified":"2020-11-23T22:29:19","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T22:29:19","slug":"organizing-prinicples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joshworth.com\/jpw\/organizing-prinicples\/","title":{"rendered":"Organizing Principles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Approaching this election, we heard a lot of calls for &#8220;specifics&#8221; &#8211; specific spending cuts, specific tax plans, specific examples of unemployed people without healthcare whose houses are in foreclosure. But maybe something more abstract would actually help us wrap our heads around these big issues.<\/p>\n<p>The question is really: &#8220;How do we want to organize ourselves as a society?&#8221; And organization is just another form of design. \u00a0So before we start designing,\u00a0I thought it might help to create some visual aids.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start here:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshworth.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/individual.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignnone wp-image-807 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27141%27%20height%3D%27113%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20141%20113%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27141%27%20height%3D%27113%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"http:\/\/www.joshworth.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/individual.jpg\" alt=\"individual\" width=\"141\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThis dot will represent the &#8220;individual&#8221; &#8211; you or me, a somewhat autonomous decision-making entity capable of shaping the world in a specific way through action and willpower (or lack thereof).<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes these individuals get together to form a group.\u00a0\u00a0A couple, a family, a city, a government, a corporation, etc.\u00a0\u00a0As anyone who has been in a relationship or started a family knows, the group has needs and decision-making powers that are often distinct from the individuals that formed it.\u00a0We&#8217;ll use a circle to represent a group.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshworth.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/group.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignnone wp-image-806 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27141%27%20height%3D%27113%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20141%20113%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27141%27%20height%3D%27113%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/joshworth.com\/jpw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/group.jpg\" alt=\"group\" width=\"141\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If we were somehow foolish enough to believe that a group of people (like a corporation) makes decisions and wields influence in the exact same way as an individual, then we would use the same dot to represent both. The color of a circle represents the power of the group itself.
